Scientific Name: Adenium obesum

Family: Apocynaceae

Adenium obesum (commonly known as Desert Rose) is a striking, drought-tolerant succulent with swollen stems and vibrant flowers. It’s popular for bonsai-style growing and thrives with the right care.

Light Requirements

  • Sunlight: Needs full sun (6+ hours/day) to bloom well.
  • If grown indoors, place it in the brightest window (preferably south-facing).
  • Inadequate light = fewer flowers and leggy growth.

Watering

  • Water sparingly – Adenium is drought-tolerant.
  • Water only when the soil is dry (during active growth).
  • In winter (dormant phase), reduce watering significantly or stop altogether.
  • Overwatering = root rot, a common killer of Adeniums.

Soil and Potting

  • Use a well-draining mix – cactus or succulent soil is ideal.
  • You can amend regular potting soil with:
  • Perlite
  • Coarse sand
  • Pumice
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Prefers warm climates – Ideal temp: 65–90°F (18–32°C).
  • Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Low humidity is best; avoid overly humid conditions indoors.

Fertilization

  • Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
  • High phosphorus fertilizer helps boost flowering.

Pruning and Shaping

  • Prune in spring to shape the plant or remove leggy stems.
  • Pruning encourages branching and more flowers.
  • Can be trained as a bonsai for artistic appearance.

Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years in early spring.
  • When repotting, you can raise the caudex (swollen stem base) slightly for aesthetic appeal.
  • Let the roots dry for a day after repotting before watering.

Common Problems

  • Yellowing leaves: Often from overwatering.
  • Black stem base or mushy roots: Root rot – remove damaged parts and replant in dry soil.
  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Note:

  • If you’re growing from seed or cutting, be patient. Flowering may take 1–2 years or more. But with good care, you’ll be rewarded with stunning blooms!
