Art and patience meet in bonsai cultivation—learn the basics.

Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in containers. With proper care, a bonsai can live for decades and become a living piece of art. The key is patience, correct pruning, and balanced watering.

Choosing the Right Bonsai Tree

Some beginner-friendly options include:

  • Ficus
  • Jade (Crassula)
  • Juniper
  • Chinese Elm
  • Peepal or Banyan (for Indian climate)
  • Choose a plant that suits your climate and sunlight conditions.

Selecting the Container (Pot)

  • A bonsai pot must:
  • Have proper drainage holes
  • Be shallow but large enough for root spread
  • Match the size and style of the tree
  • Clay or ceramic pots work best.

Soil Mix for Bonsai

  • Bonsai soil should allow air flow and drainage. Ideal mix:
  • 40% coarse sand or akadama
  • 30% garden soil
  • 30% compost or cocopeat
  • Avoid regular dense soil—it blocks oxygen and causes root rot.

Watering the Bonsai

  • Water only when the top layer of soil feels slightly dry.
  • Tips:
  • Avoid overwatering
  • Use a fine mist or gentle sprinkle
  • Ensure water drains completely from the pot
  • Humidity trays can also help, especially indoors.

Sunlight Requirements

  • Most bonsai trees need:
  • 4 to 6 hours of indirect or filtered sunlight daily
  • Avoid harsh summer midday sunlight
  • Indoor bonsai still need light near a window or balcony

Pruning and Shaping

  • There are two types:
  • Structural Pruning: Helps define the shape
  • Maintenance Pruning: Controls new growth
  • Use sharp bonsai scissors and shape the branches gradually.
  • Wiring can also be used to bend branches, but avoid overtightening.

Repotting the Bonsai

  • Repot every 1–2 years to:
  • Refresh soil
  • Trim old roots
  • Prevent root-bound condition
  • Spring is the best season for repotting.

Fertilizing the Bonsai

  • Use a balanced fertilizer monthly during growing season.
  • Best ratio: NPK 10-10-10
  • Reduce feeding during winter dormancy.
