Crown of Thorns: Euphorbia milii
Crown of Thorns: Euphorbia milii
The Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) is a hardy flowering succulent that can bloom almost all year if it receives proper care. It is loved for its bright flowers and thorny stems, and it grows very well in warm climates like India.
Sunlight: Crown of Thorns loves bright sunlight. Keep the plant where it can receive at least 4–6 hours of direct sun daily. More sunlight usually means more flowers.
Watering: This plant stores water in its stems, so it does not need frequent watering. Water only when the soil becomes completely dry. Overwatering can cause root rot.
Soil: Use well-draining soil such as cactus or succulent mix. Good drainage is very important because the plant does not like waterlogged soil.
Temperature: It grows best in warm temperatures between 18°C and 35°C. Protect the plant from frost and very cold weather.
Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). This helps produce more blooms.
Pruning: Light pruning helps the plant stay bushy and encourages new flowering branches. Always wear gloves because the stems have thorns and the sap can irritate the skin.
Propagation: Crown of Thorns can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Let the cutting dry for a day and then plant it in well-draining soil.
Extra tip: If your plant is healthy but not flowering, try giving it more sunlight and slightly reducing watering.
